Title: Examples of solidarity-based initiatives that contribute to ocean conservation and resilience
The PRCM as a multi-stakeholder partnership implements +20 projects in 7 countries along the West African coastline. All our initiatives strengthen the resilience of oceans and coastal communities that are dependent on marine resources.
With concrete examples from Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Guinea, Cabo Verde and Mauritania, this side event will show how we manage to:
- Set up new sustainable and profitable economic activities in coastal areas, as an alternative for unsustainable resource exploitation
- Increase the income of communities and thus improving their living conditions (special support for women and youth, development of sustainable value chains, etc.)
- To get communities to actively contribute to the creation of new Marine Protected Areas and conservation and protection of emblematic species such as sea turtles, migratory birds, monk seals, sharks & rays
- Reduce pressure on natural resources (mangroves, fish, shellfish, seagrass, etc.)
- Successfully contributes to long-term ocean conservation and resilience
